When it comes to French culture shocks, we're pretty aware of the classics - the French Administration, the smoking... but after having lived in France as an Expat for 5 years now, these things are a pretty standard part of life now! What I hope to do with my French Culture Shock series in dive into the details so you can fully imagine expat life in France.

The popular image of the French in the eyes of foreigners is the Parisian: that elusive, slim, stylish, rather snobby creature that somehow never gets fat. But are the Parisians really representative of French people?

If you’ve spent much time in France, like myself or my guest Oliver Gee, you’ll agree that they’re definitely not.

In fact, Parisians are their own breed, utterly different from the provinciaux, the rather condescending term Parisians use to refer to non-Parisians.

But France functions on a fundamental divide between Paris and the rest of the country, which is often referred to as "la Province" (and not "la Provence" which refers to the South-East of France).

So, Paris = Paris, not Paris = Province (not included: not Paris or province and effing far away = overseas territories and departments aka Tahiti, New Caledonia, Guadeloupe, etc.).

I for one, having spent a lot of time in the South of France know that people are more relaxed, open, able to take their time...and they're not all skinny, either!

There are so many things we could have discussed in this video, from cost of living to way of life, but the resounding message is clear - Paris is NOT France! Paris n'est pas la France!

This video is a step-by-step guide to getting PACsed in France in 2018. The video explores the Pacs benefits, requirements and documents needed and takes you through the whole pacs process from booking your appointment with the Tribunal d'Instance to the ceremony itself.

UPDATE: PACs may take place in the Mairie rather than the Tribunal d'Instance depending on your region. Contact your local town hall here in order to double check (will always be faster than calling the prefecture!!): https://lannuaire.service-public.fr/

For those of you not in the know, the PACS, or pacte civil de solidarité, or civil solidarity pact, is essentially one way to formalize your domestic partnership with your significant other. Although not as serious as a marriage, it is a contractual commitment and comes with various benefits, including tax breaks and it’s also the first step to getting a relationship visa in France (de facto relationship visa France) if you are not from the EU.

CULTURE SHOCK! Life as an "expatrie en France" or more specifically an expat in Paris! This is yet another episode in my French culture shock series so that you can understand more about what life is really like in France from my perspective.

Something I love about living abroad is how fascinating I find it all (yes, still!). Even after 5 years here, I feel like I’m still in a mode of observation, noticing small differences in mindset and behaviour. It’s probably the Psychology major in me!

I’ve had a lot of people say that I should be “over it” by now and stop doing videos on Culture Shocks but, quite honestly, I hope it never stops. I will never be 100% French and that’s part of the magic!

Just some of the things I cover in today’s culture shocks video include:

- The “internet banking” in France (if you can even call it that without real-time transactions?!)
- The mystery of the missing top sheet
- The FAKE NEWS scaffolding
- The fear of microwaves and deodorant
- The painful wait for the bill
- Your colleagues telling you have “small eyes “ hahah
